Understanding
Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV)
Online harassment isn’t just “part of being online.”
It’s real, harmful, and affects people’s lives.
What does it look like?
A partner sharing private images without consent (ex: nude photos shared in a Telegram group chat)
A stranger sending an unsolicited explicit photo (ex: dick pics)
Someone receives threats for sharing their personal story (ex: threatening comments or DMs related to murder, rape, etc.)
Online violence is real violence.
It’s time we take it seriously.
Why does it matter?
Online abuse is an extension of real-world violence. It spreads fast, lasts forever, and impacts mental health.
Who does it affect?
Everyone can be harassed, but women and LGBTQ individuals are affected disproportionately, often facing abuse simply because of their identity.
Not everyone gets the same support.
A privileged woman may find help more easily than a marginalized individual.
